What is a Sump Pump?

3/13/2023 (Permalink)

Sump pump For water damage services, call SERVPRO.

Sump pumps are small pumps that will drive water away from sump basins. There are two different types of sump pumps:

  • Submersible Sump Pump, which is hidden within sump basin
  • Pedestal Sump Pump, which is mounted above floor level and is able to be seen outside the sump basin

They have been around since 1946. In 1987, the U.S. Federal Clean Water Act made sump pumps mandatory in most new builds. Sump pumps help prevent groundwater from entering into a home or building and can also be helpful if you ever experience flooding.

When groundwater starts building up outside a building’s foundation, it will flow through a drain pipe and into the sump basin. After reaching a certain level, the sump pump will be activated and start working to draw water away from the building.

Icicles: Pretty, but Dangerous

12/12/2022 (Permalink)

Icicles on house Ice dams can cause great damage to your property if not taken care of properly.

Icicles may look pretty on your house, but despite the dangers of the icicle itself, they are a sign that you have ice dams on your roof. Ice dams are the result of ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs. They can cause a number of problems if they are not taken care of properly.

Tips on avoiding ice dams and what to do if they form

  • Avoid ice dams by making sure your roof vents are cleared off regularly.
  • Shovel the roof, or hire a company to remove snow 6-8 feet back from the edge.
  • If you find yourself with an ice dam, call us today to ensure proper removal. Do not try to hammer the ice dam or use salt, this can result in damage to your roof.
  • If the ice dam has caused interior damage to the home, give your insurance agent a call to see if your insurance covers ice dam property damage. Then give us a call and we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Contaminated Water Categories

9/8/2022 (Permalink)

Overflowing sink Do you know the contaminated water categories?

If you are a home or business owner, you have most likely been affected by some sort of water damage. Depending on the source of the damage, that water may be contaminated and require extra safety precautions. The most common types of water contaminants are:

  • Sewage
  • Food residue
  • Grease or oils
  • Bodily waste
  • Cleaning solutions such as chemicals or bleach

At SERVPRO, we use an expert led system to categorize water. Our team of experts know the correct way to determine the water contamination category by finding out the source, talking with the property owner, and observing the contaminated water.

Category 1: Clean Water

A Category 1 type of water loss is normally caused from a faucet overflow, household appliance malfunction, or broken water supply line. Although typically not harmful, it is important to call your local water restoration company as soon as possible to clean up the damage. If the water sits for too long, the environmental conditions can worsen the water contamination to a Category 2 or 3.

Category 2: Gray Water

Sources that can cause a Category 2 contamination are broken sump pumps, appliance discharge, or toilet water mixed with urination. Proceed with caution during these water losses. Bacteria and mold growth happen rapidly during this type of a water loss and can quickly turn into a Category 3 if not taken care of in a timely fashion.

Category 3: Black Water

Category 3 is the worst kind of water contamination. This type of contamination is normally sourced from sewage backup containing human or animal waste. It can also be sourced from rivers, streams, and oceans, where bacteria and unsanitary chemicals are often found. Call a water cleanup service immediately after finding this type of water loss!

  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Category 2: “Gray Water”

  • It may contain bacteria and viruses
  • It can quickly degrade into category three if left untreated

Signs of Water Leaking in My Briarwood Home?

Bulging and cracking paint reveal hidden water damage. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Do you know how to tell if your home has hidden water damage? Our local team in Fargo restores all kinds of water damage in Briarwood, and we use advanced technology and techniques to locate and identify the source of hidden water damage.

After a storm or when the snowmelt begins is an excellent time to inspect your roofing system and attic space for signs of water intrusion. Ice dam damage may not become visible until the snow melts. Two easy ways to determine where the source of the water is coming from are:

  1. If the water damage is isolated to the top floor, it is probably roof damage
  2. Water damage on interior floors could be coming from leaking pipes running between two floors or coming from an upstairs bathroom

Here are some of the “low-tech” signs that you may have water damage in your ceiling:

  • Yellow or brown spots in the ceiling paint
  • Peeling, cracking, or bubbling paint and surfaces on the ceiling or walls
  • Strong mildew or mold odor
  • Dark, round stains on the ceiling
  • Bulging or sagging ceiling
  • Bulging or stained drywall
  • Wetness or dampness on the ceiling
  • Visibly seeing water dripping through the ceiling or walls

  • Inspect your anode rod every two years, or every year once the warranty has expired, to determine if it needs to be replaced.
  • Flush water heater tanks every six months to remove sediment by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base. For safety, first turn off the power and run hot water until it is cool.

Ice Dam Control in Fargo?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

A man removing snow from a snow-laden roof is shown. We respond to water emergencies in the Fargo-Moorhead area 24-hours a day!

Ice Dam Mitigation Tips

Ice dams occur when there are fluctuating temperatures on a roof allowing some areas to freeze, the “ice dam” and other areas to remain in a liquid state. The water that is backed up behind the ice dam causes water to seep underneath the roof shingles and exterior roof barriers and can cause water damage to the roof and attic spaces inside the structure. SERVPRO® of Fargo has been mitigating water damage in the Fargo-Moorhead area for years and know that many forms of water damage can be prevented, including ice dam damage. Here are some short-term, immediate tips from the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN) to help control ice dams:

  • Remove snow from the roof.
  • In an emergency situation where water is flowing into the house structure, making channels through the ice dam allows water behind the dam to drain off the roof.
    • Hosing with tap water on a warm day will do this job.
    • Work upward from the lower edge of the dam.
    • The channel is a temporary solution and will become ineffective within days.

Basement Water Seepage in Briarwood?

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

A clean and dry basement is shown. We are on call 24-hours a day in Fargo!

SERVPRO® of Fargo responds to water damage emergencies frequently throughout the year in Briarwood, and we see the damage even a small leak can do to a structure if left unmitigated for too long. Here are some prevention tips from the Insurance Information Institute to keep your basement dry:

Prevent basement water seepage

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

Bathtub Leaking Through the Ceiling in Casselton?

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

A bathtub faucet is shown with water flowing into and filling the bathtub. Fargo residents trust us to restore water damage.

Bathtub water leaks happen

I live in an older home in the Casselton area. My home has always made lots of noises. The hardwood floors creak, and the pipes hum and knock sometimes. My living room has a dark painted ceiling, so I didn’t notice the water stain forming on the ceiling above my upstairs bathroom for some time. Evidently, a leak in the bathtub drain was causing the problem. This was an easy fix, but the subfloor underneath the bathtub was damaged, and so was the drywall on my ceiling.

Thankfully, SERVPRO® of Fargo came out and repaired the damaged area. They used an infrared camera to pinpoint the water damage and set up air movers and blowers to dry the area. Once the area was completely dry, they replaced the damaged subfloor and tile in my bathroom, repaired the drywall on my living room ceiling, and repainted. The repairs were completed very quickly, and now you would never know there ever was a leak!

house with standing flood water in front of it. Staying Healthy around Standing Water in Fargo

Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in Fargo:

Standing water of any kind in Fargo can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.

Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwaters such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.

Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Fargo suggests:

  • Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
  • Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
  • Do not allow children to play in the flood water
  • Wash children’s hands before meals
  • Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
  • Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
  • Keep your hands washed

Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in Fargo:

  • Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
  • Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
  • Clean cuts with soap and clean water
  • If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention
