Categories of Water Damage

When water damage happens to your home or workplace, the categories seem to be:

  1. Ugly
  2. Uglier
  3. Hideous

The system is more prosaic:

  1. Clean/Clear
  2. Gray
  3. Black

It’s prosaic, but not simple.

To start, understand that no category’s color applies in all cases, and that any category of water can degrade into a lower category if circumstances change, and that all categories will degrade, even if the quality is technically still in Category 3.

Category 1 water originates from a sanitary source, such as water for sinks or showers. It is safe for ingestion or contact. It may not stay clean after contacting unsanitary surfaces. After 24 to 48 hours, microbial growth starts developing.

Category 2 water originates from non-sanitary sources or from unknown sources, including rainwater. It may contain vegetation, microorganisms, and various contaminants.

Category 3 water is contaminated. It may come from sewage, toilets, waste facilities, or contaminated sites. The water may contain dirt, pesticides, toxins, organic materials, and all kinds of unpleasant regulated, substances.

SERVPRO of Fargo team members are trained to remediate every category of water damage safely. We have personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning solutions and sanitizers, and other specialized equipment to protect ourselves and others.

Restoration

We also will develop a plan for restoration, and we provide these services. While we can’t go back in time, we can help restore the building and belongings to their preloss conditions “Like it never even happened.”

Trivia!

The folks at the How Can We Use This Information desk couldn’t come up with information that fit this week’s theme, so they presented us with the first song published on MP3:
