SERVPRO of Fargo Reminds North Dakotans to Replace Smoke Detectors Every 10 Years
Replace Smoke Detectors Every Decade
Did you know that it is recommended to replace your smoke detector every 10 years? Smoke detectors help reduce the chance of death or injury in home fires. One simple task can help save lives.
SERVPRO® of Fargo reminds fellow North Dakotans: smoke alarms save lives – but only when they work.
The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) found the death rate from home fires for houses that lacked working smoke alarms was over twice that than for houses that had working smoke alarms.
The NFPA recommends:
- Replace smoke detectors once every 10 years. Yeah, we have pairs of jeans older than that, but jeans won’t save a family from death or injury in a fire.
- Replace smoke-detector batteries at least twice a year. Use easy-to-remember dates or mark them on the calendar.
- Get a system where the detectors are inter-connected. If one alarm sounds, they all sound.
- Test the alarms at least once a month (press the “alarm” button).
- When the smoke detector’s alarm goes off, get everyone outside the house and stay outside the house.

Looking Forward
At SERVPRO of Fargo, we all wish the best for everyone in the community. We hope everyone can celebrate the following dates:
October 19th: The third Monday in October is “National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day.” We had no idea such a holiday existed, but we’re hoping there are parades.
October 20th: Another “who knew?” day is “National Brandied Fruit Day.” We’ll take samples, please.
October 21st is “National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day.” Not everyone here at SERVPRO of Fargo believes that is a real thing, but we’re all more than willing to take samples of that as well.
October 22nd is “National Make a Dog’s Day”, which is pretty darned easy as they are enthusiastic about most things. Go on. Give in. It’s your dog.
October 28th: “National First Responders Day”. They deserve more than one day.
October 31st: Halloween! Trick or Treat! Chocolate is always appropriate. Just saying.
November 2nd: In 1889, we were the 39th State to officially become part of the USA. Plant an American Elm, bake a chokeberry pie, or sing “North Dakota Hymn.”
